Abstract
Experimental studies of surface enhanced nonlinear optical effects are reviewed within the framework of electromagnetic theories of enhancement. Nonlinear optical effects are catalogued by the well known power series expansion of the generalized polarization in terms of the applied optical fields and local field factors. Surface enhanced optical effects that are described by the first, second and third order polarization are in general agreement with simple models of the local field enhancement which arises from plasmon resonances of small metallic particles. Nonlinear optical phenomena studied on surfaces with controlled morphology promise to yield additional information concerning local field effects.

The SI photocathode consists of a silver island film coated with a low work function Cs-O overlayer. It is evident from early work on these devices [see “Photoemissive Material,” edited by A. H. Sommer, John Wiley and Sons, New York (1968)] that enhanced local fields near the silver particle are of major importance.
