Abstract
The concept of “developmental genetics” has undergone significant changes in recent years, particularly since molecular biology and genetics began to focus attention on mechanisms of gene transcription and translation within the context of problems of cell differentiation. As a consequence, the field has broadened and at present covers a wide area ranging from the molecular level of transcription to that of organogenesis and its genetic control. The present chapter will not attempt to cover the entire field but will be restricted to aspects of developmental genetics closest to problems of teratology, in particular those dealing with developmental mechanisms and their genetic control in the normal as well as the abnormal organism.
