Abstract
This book focuses on the potentialities and problems of developing effective vaccines against bloodstream parasites of man and his livestock. The parasites dealt with are a diverse group: trypanosomes, plasmodia, theUerias, anaplasmas, and babesias. All have arthropods as vectors during a portion of their complex life cycles. Tsetse flies transmit salivarian trypanosomes, which cause sleeping sickness in man and trypanosomiasis in cattle; reduviid “kissing” bugs transmit Chagas’ disease; mosquitoes are the vectors of malarial parasites; and different species of ticks transmit East Coast fever (ECF), anaplasmosis, and babesiosis of cattle. These diseases are among the most devastating and economically costly of those of parasitic origin.
