Functional Polyesters and Polyamides for Medical Applications of Biodegradable Polymers

  • Chapter
Polymers in Medicine

Part of the book series: Polymer Science and Technology ((PST))

Abstract

For many medical, agricultural or veterinary uses it would be desirable to have a functionalizable, biodegradable polymer which could be fabricated in the molten state by either injection molding, melt spinning or melt extrusion. These polymers could serve as carriers for biomedically active agents, which would be chemically bound to the polymer and, after release of the agent, the polymer would degrade to non-toxic, low molecular weight residues capable of being eliminated from the body by normal metabolic pathways.
