Abstract
Death records, hospital admissions records, accident and emergency department data, and surveys (family, social service agencies, office based physicians, etc.) constitute the customary sources from which estimates of the incidence of head injuries in children and adults have been made. Reported figures, however, indicate only a fraction of the actual incidence rate, which in effect remains unknown. This is not surprising, considering that the pathology of head injury ranges from the simple evidence of a bruised scalp to severe brain damage resulting in death. Furthermore, the distribution pattern of head injuries as reported by the above-mentioned sources, may misrepresent the epidemiology for a given population. Also, the lack of standardized definitions and the problems inherent in identifying and classifying pediatric craniocerebral injuries account for some of the obvious difficulties in planning effective measures to prevent head injuries and to reduce their medical, social, and economic impact.
