Abstract
Zinc sulphide (ZnS) is the prototype II–VI semiconductor. Its cubic form (β-ZnS), which occurs naturally as a mineral, has given the name “zincblende” to the crystal structure (also called “sphalerite”). β-ZnS is the primarily candidate for UV-light emitting devices as a consequence of its large band-gap energy, ∼3.7 eV at room temperature. It has the highest melting point (T m=2103 K) and smallest lattice constant (a 0=5.4102 Å at 300 K) among the II–VI zinc-blende-type semiconductors [1].
