Abstract
The anatomical arrangement, present in many tissues, of one (or two) venous vessels accompanying arterial vessels in close apposition has suggested that part of the oxygen leaving the artery (arteriole) by diffusion enters the adjacent vein, thus producing arteriovenous shunting of O2. In this report, arterio-venous diffusion shunting of O2 is studied on highly simplified models, and relevant experimental findings are reviewed.
