Abstract
Since the development of the process of n-butane oxidation to maleic anhydride, 1−4 there has been considerable research interest in alternative possibilities for the functionalization of light alkanes by selective oxidation, owing to the low cost and low environmental impact of these hydrocarbons. Apart from n-butane oxidation and more recently propane ammoxidation 5,6 (see also Chapter 4), no other processes have been commercialized or have even reached a stage of near commercialization. However, intense research effort has been devoted to this area in recent years, so a brief discussion of the challenges, opportunities, and problems in the use of alkanes as feedstocks other than for maleic anhydride or acrylonitrile synthesis (Chapter 4) is worthwhile.
