Abstract
Within any genus of flowering plants where both the annual and perennial habit occur, it is generally considered that the former has been derived from the latter, although each case must be decided on its own merits (Stebbins, 1958). Annual and perennial species often differ in a variety of biological attributes, including ( 1) degree of isolation and nature of isolating mechanisms (Grant, 1981), (2) breeding system and release of genetic variability (Stebbins, 1950, Stebbins, 1958), and (3) level of electrophoretically detectable variation at isozyme loci (Loveless and Hamrick, 1984). Despite the considerable differences that may exist in life history traits of annuals and perennials, little is known about the genetic bases of the different growth habits (Gottlieb, 1984; Macnair and Cumbes, 1989), although there is some evidence that few gene loci may control the difference.
