Abstract
The vascularly-isolated carotid body perfused with cell-free solution has been shown to exhibit Type 1 cell mitochondrial disruption when the perfusion is carried out at constant inflow pressure and apparent mitochondrial “normality” with perfusion at constant inflow volumes (O’Regan et al, 1987). Functional deterioration in these preparations has been observed (Joels and Neil, 1968). The mere structural integrity of an organ does not imply perfect functioning of that organ. However, when both physiological and ultrastructural features are in agreement certain deductions may be made. It is proposed that mitochondria have an important role in the chemotransduction process. A quantitative analysis was performed to be more precise about the nature of the mitochondrial changes observed during cell-free perfusion of the vascularly-isolated carotid body.
