Abstract

Different functions have been ascribed to the paraganglionic SIF cells located in sympathetic ganglia: they were considered as interneurons, neuroendocrine and/or chemoreceptive cells (Case and Matthews, 1985). In many was, they resemble glomus cells of peripheral chemoreceptors (Kondo, 1977). However, elucidation of their functional role is still difficult because SIF cells are few in number comparatively to the postganglionic neurones, because their incidence varies greatly according to the species and to the ganglia and because they contain numerous putative neurotransmitters.
