Abstract
There is a need for artificial tears to replace a reduced or inadequate supply of natural tears. These will be more effective if they mimic as closely as possible the desirable characteristics of normal tears. The flow or rheological properties are among the most important of these characteristics, and depend on shearing forces generated by movements of globe or lids, and the rates and amplitudes of their application.
