Abstract
The most frequently used and most widely accepted clinical description of alcoholism is contained in the revision of the third edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IIl-R), published by the American Psychiatric Association (1987). In DSM-III-R the term alcoholism is no longer used. Alcohol dependence. and alcohol abuse are the two diagnostic categories used to describe serious problems with alcohol; they are classified under the general heading of Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders, a rubric that includes problems with other drugs as well.
