Abstract
The term simple phobia refers to a large but clinically rare category of anxiety disorders characterized by peripherally cued anxiety behaviors. The diagnosis of simple phobia is applicable when the anxiety behaviors are significantly maladaptive and when other diagnoses (e.g., social phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder) have been ruled out (American Psychiatric Association, 1987).
