Abstract
In 1657, Sir William Harvey stated: “For it has been found in almost all things, that what they contain of useful or applicable nature is hardly perceived unless we are deprived of them, or they become deranged in some way”. Until recently, Harvey’s approach for elucidation of biological roles of a given enzyme (or protein) was feasible only in cases of rare genetic disorders. It has become possible to control the expression of a given protein via genetic manipulation (“Transgenesis”) in vivo as well as in cultured cells, and elucidate the ultimate roles of the protein. Developmental, physiological and behavioral roles of the proteins encoded by several genes were analyzed utilizing this technology.
