Abstract
Ecological research often involves investigations covering small field plots to areas the size of watersheds (Kareiva and Andersen 1988). Remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technology has allowed comparison of field measurements with satellite-based measurements and expanded site-specific research to include landscape and regional processes. More recent interest in landscape ecology has provided models to investigate ecological patterns and processes (Turner and Ruscher 1988). These models provide tools for analyzing ecological data in a spatial framework based on the organizational structure of the data.
