Abstract

While knowledge regarding the molecular and physiologic basis of surfactant function has been expanded primarily through study of the preterm lung, the pathogenesis of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and the precise roles played by the surfactant system in this complex disorder have remained less well defined. Since ARDS is initiated by various systemic or lung injuries, the heterogeneity of mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of ARDS are likely to be complex and involve numerous cellular pathways critical for lung function.
