Abstract

The transformation of Data into Information, and subsequently into Knowledge outlines three stages in organisational learning, a well-known DSS process (Bonczek et al. 1981, Holsapple & Whinston, 1988). We prefer to refer to this process as the ‘Information Value Chain’ by embracing the term Value Chain from Porter (Porter 1985). There is, however, little resemblance with Porter’s ‘Value Chain,’ which refers to the perceived economical ‘value’ of an organisation’s activities. We consider the ‘Value Chain’ separately, and are aware that the term Value Chain is used frequently in the literature -in proof of the impact of Porter’s work. There are at least two more Value Chains: The ‘Knowledge Value Chain,’ as considered by Knowledge Management Scholars, and the ‘Service Provision Value Chain,’ found in the literature of Application Service Provision (ASP) movement. We also consider these separately.
