Abstract
In recent years, there has been an explosive growth of the Internet in terms of (a) user population, (b) geographical coverage, and (c) carried traffic. Figure 1.1 illustrates the exponential growth of the number of hosts on the Internet, and Figure 1.2 illustrates the past and projected future growth of data and voice traffic reported by some telecom carriers [1].
