Abstract
In keeping with the tradition of earlier histories of the American Physiological Society (APS, the Society), we devote this chapter to biographies of the thirty-five eminent men who served as president of the Society during its first seventy-five years. Each brief biographical sketch is followed by a short bibliography for further information. Note that before 1927, presidents served for calendar years; after 1927 they assumed office following the annual or spring meeting or, after 1951, on 1 July. Biographies of presidents from 1888 to 1938 were written by Toby A. Appel and those from 1939 to 1962 by Orr E. Reynolds.
