Abstract

The period from 1938 to 1962 was one of rapid change in the American Physiological Society (APS, the Society). In a relatively short period of time the Society was transformed from an organization with a strictly research orientation to one with a wide range of professional activities. In 1938 the Society’s activities were limited almost entirely to holding annual meetings and publishing journals. There were as yet no standing committees, and because the Society did not undertake much, it needed little in the way of funds. Dues in 1938 were set at the same two dollars as in 1887. In 1939 there was an accumulation sufficient that dues were set at only one dollar!
