Abstract
Almost a century ago, in 1889, the first International Physiological Congress was held in Basel, Switzerland, two years after the American Physiological Society (APS, the Society) was founded in 1887. During these nearly one hundred years, American physiology has played an increasingly important role in the development of modern physiology, not only in North America but internationally as well.
