Cyatheaceae Kaulfuss

Genera 84–89

  • Chapter
Spores of the Pteridophyta

Abstract

A large family of arborescent plants including six genera, predominantly of montane areas of both neo-and paleotropics. The spores are consistently trilete with an exospore of two layers that may be pitted except in Nephelea, and the pits are obscured by perispore. The more or less prominent perispore often consists of two or three layers, the outer one often granulate, with coarse echinae or slender rodlets that are especially well developed in Cyathea, Trichipteris, and Sphaeropteris. In some spores, particularly those of Cmenidaria and Cyathea, the perispore forms a thin layer that is scarcely evident above the pitted exospore.
