Abstract
During the period between the two world wars, the scope of statistical methods was extended, and the foundations of modern statistical theory were laid. Statistics in Britain continued a gradual process of change. When war came, the pace of change increased. The official statistics were reformed by the creation of a central department. Statistical problems arose in different aspects of the war effort, and statistical advice was widely sought. Many young people were trained to join the few with experience. When peace returned, the statistical scene in Britain had been completely transformed.
The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain comprises the island consisting of England, Scotland, and Wales, together with some smaller islands. The United Kingdom is sometimes erroneously referred to as England, but this terminology does grave injustice to nations equally old which make up the whole. When convenient, Britain is used as a shorthand for the United Kingdom.
