Abstract
Influences descending from the brainstem to the spinal cord, if they are to affect behavior, eventually must register in the activity of relevant motoneurons. We proceed to discover how this occurs by working our way in from the form of the behavioral response itself to the spinal neural mechanisms that determine that form. Precise descriptions of the behavioral response provide the platform from which studies of the responsible muscles can be launched (Section B); in turn, using those muscle nerves, the responsible motoneurons can then be located and studied with anatomical and electrophysiological techniques (Sections C and D).
