Abstract
The intent of the present chapter is to review what is currently known about the involvement of the CNS in learned cardiovascular activity. Although separate, but extensive bodies of literature exist describing conditioning on the one hand and CNS control of the circulatory system on the other, relatively little is known about the CNS integration of learned cardiovascular responses. This is because important information is lacking about (1) cardiovascular dynamics during conditioning, (2) pathways mediating learned responses, and (3) the role of learned cardiovascular respones as biological adjustments.
The research from our laboratory described in this chapter was primarily supported by research grants GB-5307, GB-7944, and GB-24713 from the National Science Foundation and by a grant from the Florida Heart Association and its affiliate chapters.
