Abstract
The token economy has been applied across a wide range of populations and treatment, rehabilitation, and educational settings. This chapter reviews token programs with psychiatric patients, the mentally retarded, and individuals in classroom settings. Token economies with these populations constitute the vast majority of programs. Because of the extensive literature in each of these areas, the review will only highlight exemplary programs of historical and contemporary interest and illustrate recent advances. The next chapter reviews token programs with delinquents, adult offenders, drug addicts and problem drinkers, outpatients, and other populations.
