Abstract
The token economy is a type of behavior modification program which relies heavily upon the principles of operant conditioning. There are relatively few major principles of operant conditioning, although there is extensive research bearing on the effective implementation of the techniques derived from the principles. An understanding of the principles and diverse basic research findings is fundamental to the success of token programs. The present chapter provides an overview of the basic principles of operant conditioning. Knowledge of these principles will be assumed throughout the remaining chapters.1
