Abstract

We have shown that a newly arisen neutral mutation has very little chance of survival and fixation, unless the population size is very small. Suppose, however, that the mutant conveys a selective advantage to its possessor. Is the chance of survival and fixation greatly enhanced? Can a selective advantage turn a rank outsider into the favourite?
