Abstract

Natural populations of the blue-green alga Microcystis aeruginosa were collected during the summer months. Toxic cells and toxin extracts were tested on laboratory rats to determine possible long term effects of the toxin.

From the investigations, it was ascertained that the toxin in a dose of 5 × 10−4 mg/kg and cell biomass in a dose of 10 mg/kg injected into pregnant rats over 19 days caused embryolethal, teratogenic and gonadotoxic effects. Algae biomass in the foregoing dose also possessed mutagenic properties provoking anomalies of chromosome and chromatid apparatus.

This paper was reviewed and edited by Dr. Wayne Carmichael, Department of Biological Sciences and Dr. Jane Scott, Department of Anatomy, Wright State University. Portions of the text were edited for clarification and corrections by the authors were made in February 1981. The authors were not present at the conference proceedings.
