Abstract
In his etiological analysis of fish behavior Baerends (1971) distinguishes between behavioral functions associated with the maintenance of the body and those associated with the maintenance of the species. The first category encompasses respiration, locomotion, feeding, schooling, and defense against predators. Nesting behavior, courtship, fertilization, parental care, and agonistic behavior are functions of the second category.
