Projections of the Teleostean Telencephalon

  • Chapter
Comparative Neurology of the Telencephalon

Abstract

It has been hypothesized that the development of the teleostean telencephalon from the rostral end of the neural tube takes place by a process of lateral eversion rather than evagination (cf. Scalia and Ebbesson, 1971). Such a process would thus be a side step in the evolution of the forebrain. However, although the eversion hypothesis has provided a reasonable basis for investigation, the telencephalon of bony fishes remains a source of considerable controversy. Such controversy arises in part from the fact that the structure of the telencephalon is by no means uniform throughout this rich and varied class of vertebrates (cf. Ariëns Kappers et al., 1936), but the disagreements are also due, in an even greater measure, to the fact that the descriptions of fiber connections of telencephalic cell groups in teleosts are based largely on studies of normal material, which are subject to inaccuracies and doubts.
