Abstract
The function of alkaline phosphatase is not understood. Like several other enzymes such as butyrylcholinesterase and D-amino acid oxidase in mammals and urease in the jack bean, alkaline phosphatase hydrolyzes substrates that are not found at sites where the enzyme is normally located. Although the hydrolytic functions of alkaline phosphatase have been intensively studied for more than 50 years, we have at this time no clear idea of the value of this enzyme to the organism. As shown in Table 12.1, many roles have been suggested for this enzyme.
