Abstract
The declining populations of numerous non-human primate species in the wild makes breeding endangered species in captivity an urgent priority (Stevenson, Chap. 8, this volume). Whilst on the one hand, this reduces the exploitation of wild populations, on the other, such animals represent reserve stock which can be utilized for reintroduction into the natural habitat if the need were to arise. Such captive populations also represent a valuable source for studies on the species’ behaviour and general biology and complement studies carried out on wild populations.
