Abstract
The development of chitin chemistry has been hampered by the lack of convenient analytical techniques for the chitin family of polymers. Desirable features of appropriate techniques are sensitivity to structural variations, simplicity, speed, and low cost. The characterization of chitin and its derivatives by analytical pyrolysis has been investigated as the technique which appears to satisfy these requirements.
