Influence of Dissolved Additives on the Critical Micellar Concentration of Surfactants

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

According to the theory developed by us, for every surfactant the addition of small enough quantity of additive leads to a decrease of .the CMC, A phenomenological expression is proposed for the standard chemical potential of a mixed micelle built up of the molecules of the detergent and of the additive. This expression could be applied for the cases of substances which readily solubilize into the micelles as well as for the cases when this condition is not fulfilled. It takes into account the dependence of the intermolecular interaction energy (in the framework of one micelle) on the number of detergent and additive molecules.
