Taurine Modifies Calcium Ion Uptake and Protein Phosphorylation in Rat Heart

  • Chapter
Taurine and the Heart

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 93))

Abstract

The function of taurine in mammalian tissues is undefined. In the last few years, however, a number of hypotheses have been put forth that now can be tested. Huxtable and Bressler initially suggested in 1973 that taurine was a membrane stabilizer in rat skeletal muscle by virtue of its positive effects both on the yield of microsomes and sarcoplasmic reticulum during isolation and on the rate of calcium oxalate uptake in sarcoplasmic reticulum [1]. It was suggested at this time that there was an interaction between taurine and membrane phospholipids.
