Abstract
Alcohol and many other drugs are “psychoactive substances” that pharmacologically affect various functions (e.g., mood, cognitions, judgment). In this chapter, the use of psychoactive drugs, including alcohol, which results in adverse consequences for the user or for society, will be referred to as drug problems. The views expressed in this chapter are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of the Addiction Research Foundation.
