Abstract

This chapter is intended as a brief introduction to recent experiments in which tunable lasers have been used instead of synchrotron radiation to probe highly excited states in the photoionization continuum of free atoms. The methods involved, which are comparatively new, are described, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of tunable laser versus synchrotron radiation sources are explained. Examples of recent spectra are then given, drawn from our program at Imperial College, and this is followed by some consideration of specific problems for which laser-based experiments are most fruitful.
