Abstract
The chapters in this volume are the result of research and synthesis efforts of the Grassland Biome study of the U.S. International Biological Program (IBP) which originated as part of the Analysis of Ecosystems program in the American contribution to the IBP. The focal point of the Grassland Biome studies was improvement of our understanding of an entire ecosystem. No matter how narrow or detailed a single given project or study may have been, the relationship to the whole system was the dominant theme. The first grant in support of these studies from the National Science Foundation was received in the summer of 1968, with supplemental funding from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Fieldwork started in 1969 on the Intensive Site in northeastern Colorado.
