Abstract
The pancreas develops from the caudal portion of the foregut during the 3–4-mm stage of the human embryo (1,2). Growth occurs from two separate primordia or anlagen which arise from the endodermal epithelium of the duodenum (Fig. 4.1A). The dorsal anlage is the first to develop and is located opposite and cranial to the hepatic diverticulum. It grows rapidly and extends into the dorsal mesentery of the duodenum. The ventral anlage is composed of two separate buds. It develops slightly later and is located caudal to the hepatic diverticulum (3,4). The smaller left ventral bud usually regresses, and only the right persists. The ventral anlage undergoes a 90° clockwise rotation and migrates dorsally, eventually occupying a position within the mesoduodenum along the posteroinferior margin of the dorsal pancreatic anlage (Fig. 4.1B).
