Abstract

The following article is part of the first chapter of Dehn’s lectures on group theory, probably written in 1909 or 1910. The date can be guessed from the next chapter of the notes, which includes an outline of some results from the famous paper, Dehn [1910], mentioning that details will appear in the Mathematische Annalen, which indeed they did in 1910.
