Abstract
An important part of the orthodox view is that smoking is addictive, and hence that nicotine joins the addictive drugs such as heroin, LSD, and so on. A recent report of the U.S. Surgeon General (1988), “Nicotine Addiction,” contains the following major conclusions:
-
1.
Cigarettes and other forms of tobacco are addicting
-
2.
Nicotine is a drug in tobacco that causes addiction
-
3.
The pharmacologic and behavioral processes that determine tobacco addiction are similar to those that determine addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine
