Abstract
Hubbert (1953) has demonstrated that one of the effects of moving water upon a trapped accumulation of oil or gas in a reservoir is that the interface between the water and the oil tilts downward in the direction of flow, creating an inclined hydrocarbon-water contact, or transition zone. Furthermore, he showed that the slope on the potentiometric surface in the vicinity of the hydrocarbon accumulation that reflects the water flow is numerically related to the tilt on the hydrocarbon-water contact by a factor determined by the contrast between the densities of the underlying dynamic water phase and the overlying static oil or gas phase.
