Abstract
This chapter introduces specific force sensors, or, as traditionally known in the technical literature, accelerometers. The subject is treated at both the sensor and the system level, that is, it considers both how, and what it measures on moving vehicles. It ranges from traditional spring-mass devices to modern vibrating beam quartz or silicon technologies. The effects of sensor imperfections in various applications are also addressed.
