Interactions Between the Leaf Miner, Phyllocnistis suffusella, and Poplars

Mechanisms of Woody Plant Defenses Against Insects

Abstract

Phyllocnistis suffusella is a microlepidoptera leaf miner which is very common in Belgium. It has two generations per year. Eggs are laid on young leaves in the growing stage, into which the caterpillar penetrates to make its mine. In an extensive study, it was found to be present in about 25 percent of the leaves examined (Nef 1987). Further information about the biology of Phyllocnistis suffusella may be found in Arru (1966) and in Nef and Janssens (1982).
