Abstract

This chapter traces an itinerary which led from the eighteenth century to modern structural mechanics. Our narrative must deal with a number of very different scientific and cultural viewpoints, disputes and diatribes. In the end, the solution to the problem appeared simultaneously in several places, as though it had been there all the time, just waiting to be caught. As Todhunter and Pearson note,1 the history of the theory of elastic systems bears a certain resemblance to that of solids of equal resistance, discussed above. In both cases, Italy provided a fertile ground for discussion and a passion for research, in which the loftiest intentions coexisted with thoroughly human and personal ambition. The dispute about solids of equal resistance proved easy to resolve, once its terms were clarified; each faction possessed a part of the truth. But the question of elastic systems was a far thornier matter.
