Abstract
Pollen biological investigations have verified lately that approximately 65% of the analysed structural genes in plant genomes are expressed both in sporophytic and gametophytic generations (Tanksley et al., 1981; Willing et al., 1986; Sari-Gorla et al., 1986). This extent of genetic overlap gives the possibility of in vitro and in vivo pollen genotype selection. Pollen genotype selection would be more effective than the sporophytic selection since large numbers of pollen grains can be exposed to selection pressure on the haploid level (without the confounding effect of dominance, epistasis, etc.) as was suggested by Mulcahy (1979) and Pfahler (1983).
