Abstract
InPetunia hybrida. the incompatibility reaction is mediated by both the haploid genome of the male gametophyte and the diploid genome of the female sporophyte tissues of pistil. Pollen carried to the stigma surface of the pistil produced the tubes that penetrate the stigma and grow through the style to the ovary. In plants with a style like inPetunia the pollen tubes grow between the cells of the central transmitting tract. These cells are arranged in longitudinal files, which are separated by mucilage. The arrest of incompatible pollen tubes occurs within the transmitting tissue of the style (Linakens, 1975). The rejection of incompatible pollen tubes (8–16 hours after self-pollination) is accompanied by higher sucrose and fructose but not glucose levels. Hence compatible pollen tubes absorb more carbohydrates from the style tissues than incompatible tubes. Glucose produces callose deposited in the tubes, particularly in the incompatible pollen tubes.
