Abstract
Self-incompatibility exhibited by members of the Solanaceae family is of gametophytic type and, in the simplest case, is controlled by a single multiallelic locus called the S-locus. (For a comprehensive treatise on the self-incompatibility system refer to the monograph by de Nettancourt, 1977.) Fertilization is blocked when the S-allele carried by the pollen matches one of the two alleles carried by the pistil. Incompatible pollen initially germinates and the tube penetrates the stigma, but its growth is subsequently inhibited before reaching half the length of the style. The tips of incompatible pollen tubes usually swell and burst open.
